Scartezzini?

One of the first operations to which the sheared wool is submitted is the carding: the flakes are combed to you with an instrument in hook form, the “scardasso”, eliminating the leftovers and transforming

fibers in a continuous veil. The person in charge of such operation is called, in Italian, “cardatore” or “scardassiere” (carder); in dialetto Trentino “scartezim”, “scartazin” and also (in accordance with the Azzolini) “spelaim”. In its turn, “scardasso” was the northern term in order to indicate the “thistle of the wool manufacturing” (the Dipsacus fullonum), the plant whose little incurvated terminals (in hook or nail form), was used to comb the wool. The last name is frequent in the region of Civezzano and the Valley of Adige, mainly in Trento.

Original text in Italian: Una delle prime operazioni a cui viene sottoposta la lana tosata è la cardatura: i fiocchi vengono pettinati con un attrezzo uncinato, lo scardasso, eliminando le scorie e trasformando le fibre in un velo continuo. L'addetto a tale operazione è chiamato, in italiano, cardatore o scardassiere; in dialetto trentino scartezim, scartazin e anche (riporta l'Azzolini) spelaim. A sua volta, 'scardasso' era voce settentrionale per indicare il 'cardo dei lanaioli' (Dipsacus fullonum), la pianta i cui capolini terminali uncinati, seccati, venivano usati per pettinare la lana. Il cognome è frequente nella zona di Civezzano e nella Val d'Adige, soprattutto a Trento.
